Images from the non-touristy side of Athens (pt.2)

Here's the second installment of photos from "the non-touristy side of Athens", which will sure find some good company with other posts in AthensWalker (such as part 1, here). Consider it a way of saying goodbye to this tumultuous winter season. All of these photos were shot from a terrace in Gyzi neighborhood during a January evening, as a storm was approaching from the west.

Images from the non-touristy side of Athens (pt.1)

Most people visiting Athens come here during the sunny months of the year and visit the main tourist attractions / archaeological sites for a couple of days before heading off to the islands or some other inland destination. So, they never get to see the side of Athens that locals do and which, for some twisted reason, I seem to prefer, at least photographically. On the other hand, it is true that if I visited Greece during the summer months I'd probably rather spend more time in the countryside or the islands than stay in the often sweltering heat of Athens.

So, take these next two posts (and a few previous ones) as a public service to those of you who will never get to experience our narrow streets of greyness, the sprawling urban jungle or a cold, windy and rainy day during your Greek vacation. All these photos (9 today and another 9 in the following post) were shot from a terrace in Gyzi neighborhood around dusk, on such a grey, winter evening last January, as a storm was fast approaching from the west. I like the ones towards the end better, but all of them together provide a "picture" of the gradual setting of the light and the coming of darkness which gives the city a much different character.

Pictures of an Athens thunderstorm

It's been a mostly rainy January in Athens this year. Coming back from work the other day, I knew I should be able to snap a few decent pictures of the raging thunderstorm from my balcony. I think they capture the mood of the moment here in Greece (for a good number of us), better than any deep and thoughtful analysis I could write at this point...

I leave you from a very cold and rainy Athens with 2 photos of a(n) -almost- full rainbow that I got to shoot from home this noon.

Looking west: 48 cityscapes of Athens (part 4)

This post marks the end of a very long and busy semester for me. I was forced to stop exploring Athens and writing about it and instead piled a huge, digital heap of photos onto you; all of them in pre-scheduled posts, thanks to Blogger's latest cool features. I hope you've enjoyed them, together with my short descriptions. As you are reading this, I am probably -and hopefully...- recovering from a long and demanding business trip half a world away.

In the coming months I'm going to focus all my attention on finding a job that I like, in a country that's more welcoming to me than this one has been. On the side I will continue exploring Athens, as I want to tell you as many things as possible about this city and there's already a long list of posts that have been brewing in my mind. For one thing, I want to visit and cover for you every single remaining museum in or near Athens. I must admit I have not been much of a museum person till I started writing this blog, and these visits have really opened my eyes.

So, enjoy these last westward photos, and see you soon, ...in the streets of Athens.
